1. Check the seals around fireplace flues and kitchen and dryer vents. These leaks can be fixed with caulking and metal collar plates.

2. Check cracks around doors. You may need to install weather stripping or replace your storm door.

3. Are your windows sealed tightly? Precious heat may be escaping. You many want to consider new storm windows.

4. Consider an automatic programmable thermostat to adjust heating when you are away from the house.

5. Seal the space behind light switches and outlet plates.

6. Insulate walls, attic and floors.

7. Fill gaps around pipes in your home. (sink, washing machine, vents, etc.) These can be filled with insulation, caulking or a wall patch.

8. Replace costly light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs.

9. Keep your furnace clean and properly serviced.
